The Clean Coast – the Clean Sea!

On September 9, 2023, employees of the Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology (IGE) completed cleaning the coast and adjacent water area near the General Park, the Tyub-Karagan Cape, Kazakhstan. ‘We have done a great job with our team,’ said Mirgaliy T. Baimukonov, Director of IGE, ‘according to preliminary results, more than 2 tons of marine debris and fishing nets have been collected in this area, and we have found and removed 306 kg of nets on the coast. untangled fishes (the total weight of 286 kg) from the gear and released them into the Caspian Sea.’

Now the group busy in cleaning up the coastal waters is moving to a new location, south of Fort Shevchenko, and part of the team working on the shore is collecting garbage between Fort-Shevchenko and the village of Bautino. ‘We have covered 17 km; the survey area has been 1.7 square meters. Even three trucks have not been enough to load all garbage collected here! It is outrageous how much anthropogenic pollution has been accumulated in this area over 4 years,’ said M.T. Baimukanov.
