Over 50 Dead Seals Found in Dagestan

Dozens of dead Caspian seals were found by specialists of the Caspian Environmental Center on the Caspian Sea coast in Dagestan, “Our specialists found more than 50 seal carcasses. They have been stranded by waves for several days. It has not yet been established when they died and from what,” said Zaur Gapizov, the Head of Caspian Environmental Center.

In December 2022, more than 2 500 dead seals were found on the Dagestan coast. Asphyxia due to the release of natural gas was considered as the main reason for the mass death of Caspian seals in Dagestan, said Svetlana Radionova, the Head of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation (Rosprirodnadzor).
