To preserve biodiversity of the Caspian Sea
Compass Foundation for Support and Development of Environmental Initiatives and PJSC Lukoil have joined efforts to preserve the biodiversity of the Caspian Sea. Their partnership will focus on preserving Caspian seals. The foundation is already working on this, implementing a research program with scientists from Dagestan State University and raising the issue of additional protection measures for these rare marine mammals.
Lukoil has its own biodiversity conservation programs in the Caspian region, in which the Caspian seal occupying a special place. In 2021 and 2023, with the support of this major oil and gas company, a population abundance was conducted at autumn haul-out sites and during a winter breeding season in the Russian sector of the Caspian Sea. The results of the latest research were published in a scientific paper (Sidorov et al., 2023).

The new collaboration between these two organizations will intensify conservation efforts in the Russian sector of the Caspian Sea and attract additional resources to preserve this unique, endangered species.
