Roshydromet: the Caspian Sea shallowing will continue
‘The Caspian Sea level will continue to decline over the next three to five years,’ said Igor A. Shumakov, head of the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of the Russian Federation (Roshydromet), at a session of the Coordinating Committee for Hydrometeorology of the Caspian Sea (CASPCOM), which took place in St. Petersburg on September 4-5, 2025.
The session addressed issues related to the further development of cooperation between CASPCOM and the countries participating in the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea (the Tehran Convention), in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2013. Members of the Coordination Committee from the five Caspian littoral states discussed plans to jointly organise a scientific conference in May, 2026, dedicated to secular fluctuations in the Caspian Sea level, their impact on the marine ecosystem and socio-economic development of the Caspian region (read more about the conference here).
