To Save the Caspian Sea
Last week, Zulfiya B. Suleimenova, Advisor to the President of Kazakhstan – Special Representative of the President for International Environmental Cooperation, took part in a Caspian scientific expedition organized by the Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology (Almaty, Kazakhstan). ‘Being in field, working and communicating with scientists, it is easier to outline a plan of specific and effective actions to fulfill the task of the Head of State for preserving the Caspian Sea ecosystem, its flora and fauna, and of course the Caspian seal,’ said Z.B. Suleimenova. ‘During the expedition, specialists from the Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology carried out researches on islands in the Kendirli Bay – observed seal haul-outs, and collected samples for hydrobiological analysis.’
Zulfiya B. Suleimenova assured that specific actions and plans for saving the Caspian Sea would be implemented by Kazakhstan in the near future.
President K.K. Tokayev has proposed to create International Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation in the Caspian and all over the country. And he will personally manage this project. Tokayev has called on the Caspian states to intensify cooperation in environmental monitoring of the sea and in exchanging of data obtained.
In order to develop regional science, the Caspian Sea Research Institute, a non-profit joint-stock company with 100% state participation, has been established. Its main goal is to research environment, biodiversity and sustainable development of the region. The institute will deal with issues concerning rapid decline of the Caspian Sea level, identify causes of mass mortality of fish and Caspian seals, conduct environmental monitoring of the Caspian Sea, and develop cooperation with partners from other Caspian littoral countries.
