Border guards rescued a Caspian seal
In the northern part of the Caspian Sea, Russian border guards rescued a young seal entangled in poaching net. The injured animal was found by the crew of a patrol boat. With parting words “Live, handsome”, the border guards released the seal back to the sea. During the operation, officers of the Federal Security Service of Russia in the Republic of Kalmykia and the Astrakhan Region found 30 poachers’ fishing nets and released into the Caspian Sea over 200 sturgeons.
In total, since the beginning of 2021, during trawling, border guards have lifted 1,700 nets with a length of more than 68 kilometers, over 600 tackles and 75 thousand hooks from the water. About 1 thousand fish of sturgeon species listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation, and almost 50 thousand fishes of small species have been returned to the Caspian Sea.
