Dozens of Dead Seals in Kazakhstan

On April 27, 2022, while surveying the coast of the Caspian Sea, employees from the Fish Inspectorate for the Mangistau Region of MEGNR RK Fisheries Committee, the Department of Ecology for the Mangistau Region, the veterinary service and local executive bodies found 94 dead Caspian seals. Representatives of the Department of Ecology for the Mangistau Region took water and soil samples for laboratory research. The reasons for the mortality of these Caspian seals have not been identified. Monitoring of the sea coast in the Mangistau Region is being continued.

According to the Fisheries Committee of MEGNR RK (the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan), this is not the only case of mass mortality of Caspian seals. Over the past 5 years, in 2017, the largest number of dead animals (247 individuals) was found near the city of Fort Shevchenko. Mangistau Region, Kazakhstan. Causes for the death of those seals could not be identified.
