At the beginning of May 2021, 170 dead Caspian seals were beached in Dagestan. According to the information posted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia on their Telegram Channel, almost all animals were young. And this was a huge blow to the population. Most likely, the seals were caught in fishing trawls. After that, most of the animals were skinned and thrown into the sea.
The situation has been taken under personal control by Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation Alexander Kozlov, ‘An outrageous situation. The population of rare animals is threatened, why? Because someone catches the kilka on the way of their [Caspian seals] migration, and then tries to hide his traces by poaching [on Caspian seals]!’
Data (records, photographs and GPS coordinates of each dead seal) that has been collected during the survey of the coastal zone is being systematized and will be submitted to the Environmental Prosecutor’s Office and Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources.
