At the beginning of May 2021, 170 dead Caspian seals were beached in Dagestan. Almost animals were young. And this was a huge blow to the population. Most likely, the seals were caught in fishing trawls. After that, most of the animals were skinned and thrown into the sea.
The situation was taken under personal control by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation Alexander Kozlov, ‘An outrageous situation. The population of rare animals is threatened, why? Because someone catches the kilka (the Caspian sprat) on the way of Caspian seals migration, and then tries to hide the traces by poaching!’
Now the information collected during the survey of the coastal zone is being systematized: records, photographs and GPS coordinates of each dead seal. Materials are already awaiting in the Environmental Prosecutor’s Office and Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources.
